Socialisation & Understanding Your Dog

How dogs see the world, the socialisation window and preventing separation anxiety.

This guide is for information only. It doesn’t replace advice from your vet or a qualified behaviourist — if you’re ever worried, call your vet.

Lesson 1

How your puppy sees the world

Smell is your dog’s primary sense — estimated at 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours. Dogs hear higher frequencies and are sensitive to your tone, see better in low light but with limited colour, and use touch for bonding. They communicate mostly without words: tail position, ears and posture; yawning, lip-licking and eye contact; barking, whining and growling; and scent marking. Reading this body language helps prevent misunderstandings.
